ESME

My phone hums with a call on Saturday evening.

At first, I think it’s Lainey. But then, my mouth falls open in surprise when the caller’s name flashes across the screen.

Silence is what I hear for the first couple of seconds.

“I’m home... If you want to talk,” Kiara says in a quiet voice.

My hand trembles, squeezing my phone.

“I’ll be there.”

Rushed, I put my clothes on–– jeans, a long-sleeved top, a sweater, boots, and a winter jacket.

I leave without calling Lainey.

I send her a text, though.

Me: I can’t come tonight. I’ll call you later.

My phone vibrates with her reply as I set foot on the sidewalk.

Lainey: Everything okay?

Hurriedly, I type a message.

Me: Yes.

Once I’m done, I slip the phone into my pocket and glance around, looking for a taxi.

I have no patience to call a cab or wait for one, so I walk briskly to the metro station.

Thirty minutes later, I enter Kiara’s building. I take the stairs up and stop in front of her door.

I knock once.

“Come in. It’s open.”

Her voice echoes behind the door.

I walk in and find her in the kitchen.

“I’m sorry,” she says. “I was just cleaning my house, and I had to finish this,” she says, organizing one of the cupboards. “Please take a seat.”

Her house looks different, yet again.

Different than how it was when we took pictures in her bed, and also when we celebrated New Year’s Eve at her place.

She changed the covers, the decorative pillows, and also the rugs. Candles that smell like pine trees spread an earthy aroma through the air.

I figure this is her way of clearing her mind and thinking about things. My mom used to do this. She still does it. I, on the other hand, would rather read a book or watch TV.

Lainey just goes out.

I set my winter jacket on a chair and take a seat.

“Would you like a slice of cake?” she asks as she closes the cupboard door and pivots to me.

I muse for a moment.

“It’s good. Chocolate cake with coconut buttercream frosting. My favorite.”

“Okay. A small slice.”

“Small, it is.”

For the next few minutes, I watch her retrieving the cake from the fridge and cutting two slices. She sets them on dessert plates and brings them to the table.

“Water or coffee?”

“Water is good.”

She makes another trip to fill two glasses with water.

They are on the table a moment later when we both sample the sweet treat.

“It’s good,” I say, catching a few crumbs.

“Yes, it is,” she mutters, sunk in thought.

She pins a blank stare on the table before she looks at me.

“I’m sorry that we had that fight last night,” she says.

I read her eyes for a moment.

“That’s why I didn’t want to tell you much,” she adds.

I refrain from commenting.

“I guess I didn’t want you to get angry with me, and then both of us to get stuck together and have no trust in each other.”

I ponder over her words for a split second before I breathe out a sarcastic chuckle.

“Trust, Kiara?”

“What’s so funny?” she asks, taken aback by my reaction.
